Legal Counsel

Australia - Sydney

Axiom is supporting a high‑growth technology business seeking an immediately available legal contractor to provide interim support to its payments and regulatory function for a 3–4‑month engagement. This role sits within a fast‑paced, product‑driven environment and will work closely with senior leaders across payments, risk, and compliance to maintain momentum while permanent hiring is underway. The engagement offers full flexibility on location, weekly hours, and seniority level, provided the contractor can operate autonomously and deliver pragmatic, commercially grounded regulatory advice. This opportunity would suit a payments‑focused legal professional who thrives in agile, tech‑enabled settings and is comfortable managing varied workstreams across product development, regulatory interpretation, and cross‑functional stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the development and expansion of payments products across the Australian, US, and UK markets.
  • Provides guidance to Product and Engineering teams on AFSL, AML, and broader risk‑management obligations.
  • Delivers legal insight and risk‑mitigation support for high‑priority strategic initiatives and incident response matters.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with regulators and technical subject‑matter experts.
  • Works closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Privacy teams to embed financial‑crime considerations into product design.
  • Supports day‑to‑day legal operations to ensure continuity and momentum across the payments legal workstream.

Requirements:

  • Brings practical experience in payments and financial services, ideally gained in tech‑enabled or product‑driven environments rather than large traditional financial institutions.
  • Demonstrates strong working knowledge of licensing, anti‑money‑laundering requirements, and broader regulatory risk frameworks relevant to payments operations.
  • Communicates complex regulatory concepts clearly and works effectively in fast‑moving, cross‑functional settings with minimal oversight.
  • Manages multiple priorities confidently and fits within a flexible engagement model, whether full‑time for a shorter period or part‑time across the full 3–4‑month term.
