Navigating Large Legal Projects: An Axiom Lawyer's Perspective

As an Axiom lawyer who has managed teams of up to 60 people on large-scale, complex legal projects, I've learned a thing or two about what it takes to successfully navigate them. In this post, I'll share my insights on why companies typically need large legal projects completed, how I approach them, and why clients trust Axiom lawyers —like me— to get the job done.
The Need for Large Legal Projects: A Case Study in Compliance Management Systems
As today’s regulatory landscape continues to rapidly evolve, companies often find themselves in need of extensive legal support to keep up with changing requirements and maintain compliance. A perfect example of this is a recent project I led; my team helped a Fortune 100 financial institution update its Compliance Management System (CMS).
The need for this project stemmed from the explosive growth of regulatory statutes, particularly at the state level, over the past decade. Our client recognized their existing CMS needed a significant overhaul to effectively manage these new requirements. This issue isn't unique to the financial sector— many industries are facing similar challenges as regulations become more complex and far-reaching.
The structure of such a project is multifaceted:
- Scope Definition: We needed to identify which statutes and regulations were relevant to the client's operations across multiple jurisdictions.
- Gap Analysis: This involved comparing the current CMS against new regulatory requirements to identify areas needing improvement.
- System Design: We had to create a new structure for the CMS that would be more adaptable to future regulatory changes.
- Implementation: This included updating processes, training staff, and integrating new technologies.
- Testing and Refinement: Finally, we needed to ensure the new system worked as intended and make any necessary adjustments.
The sheer scale of this project —involving dozens of team members, thousands of regulatory items, and impacting operations across the entire organization— is what classifies it as a "large legal project."
My Approach to Large Projects: Planning, Communication, and Adaptability
When tackling a project of this magnitude, I've found that a thoughtful approach is crucial. Here's how I manage these complex undertakings:
1. Invest in Planning
One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is the importance of thorough planning. It might seem counterintuitive when facing tight deadlines, but spending a few days on intense, critical thinking about the project's goals, expectations, and operational impact can save weeks of wasted effort down the line.
While working on our CMS project, we took the time to clearly define our objectives, identify our target audience (who would be using the new system), and outline our overall approach. This initial investment paid dividends throughout the project, keeping us aligned and focused.
2. Develop a Robust Reporting System
Large projects generate vast amounts of data, and it's crucial to have a system in place to track progress and report to the client effectively. Throughout the CMS project, we worked closely with the client to develop a reporting mechanism that provided them with the key metrics they needed —completion percentage, error rates, and estimated time to completion— without overwhelming them with unnecessary details.
This is where Axiom's support really shines. We have the experience of knowing what clients need to see and the flexibility to tailor our reporting to each client's specific requirements.
3. Ensure Clear Communication
With a team of 50+ people working remotely, clear communication is non-negotiable. I make a point of being available early (often online by 5:00 or 6:00 AM) to address any questions that arise. We also implement a "pod" system, with sub-team leads to ensure everyone has a point of contact.
Regular team meetings are crucial. Throughout the CMS project, we held weekly all-hands meetings where team members could ask questions and discuss challenges. This open dialogue is vital, especially when dealing with complex regulatory language that might have different interpretations across jurisdictions.
4. Embrace Technology
Remote work doesn't have to be a hindrance. In fact, for large projects, it can be an advantage. We use video conferencing tools to walk through processes step-by-step, sharing screens to demonstrate exactly what we need. This visual and interactive approach ensures everyone is on the same page, regardless of their physical location.
5. Foster a Collaborative Environment
As a team lead, I believe in creating an environment where questioning is encouraged. I always tell my team, "There are no dumb questions." This approach not only helps clarify any ambiguities but also strengthens our final product by ensuring we've considered multiple perspectives.
