Change Healthcare is one of the world’s largest healthcare technology companies. It offers software, analytics, network solutions, and technology-enabled services to help create a stronger, more collaborative healthcare system.
As a newly launched company founded from the merger of McKesson’s spun-off McKesson Technology Solutions business and Change Healthcare Holdings in March 2017, Change Healthcare needed to build up its internal legal and compliance organization. It needed to adjust its infrastructure and operate without access to the shared services network previously provided by its Fortune 500 parent company. Change Healthcare sought a partner that could quickly provide support for a broad range of legal matters. Relying solely on traditional law firms was deemed inefficient and challenging to budget.
Change Healthcare retained Axiom in May 2017 after Change Healthcare’s spin-off to provide two experienced lawyers to augment Change Healthcare’s in-house legal team. Axiom was soon asked to support significantly more work. Axiom lawyers offered a variety of skill sets and the flexibility to ramp from a few lawyers to more than a dozen across seven practice areas within a few months. Axiom lawyers supported work across numerous legal subject matters, including privacy, transactions and compliance. Within those areas, Axiom lawyers provided support on policies and procedures, compliance, regulations, government contracts, procurement contracts, customer contracts, real estate matters, incidents and investigations.
Axiom’s solution included engagements with individual lawyers dedicated to a subject matter as well as engagements with teams of multiple lawyers working together on large projects or to support areas where the client had significant personnel gaps. For each team engagement, Axiom provided an experienced team leader to oversee the team’s work and the team had a mix of seniority and capacity that would adjust with demand to optimize capabilities and cost. Additionally, Axiom provided analytics for operational metrics such as volume of work, turnaround times, complexity levels and key legal issues. These analytics were critical to report progress, improve processes and help the newly independent legal department determine its optimal resourcing structure.
Change Healthcare generated efficiency by using Axiom lawyers as a fluid workforce and reallocating them to new projects or hiring gaps. Further, Change Healthcare generated significant cost savings, including $100,000 to $250,000 per month for each team engagement that, in aggregate, saved them an estimated $5 million in the first two years as an independent company.
