Join Our Team as an Export Controls Compliance Counsel at Axiom

Location: Hybrid 1-2 days in office (must reside in New York, NY or Washington, DC). 

We are seeking an Export Controls Compliance Counsel to join the Global Trade Compliance team supporting a leading FAANG-level technology company. In this role, you will support the ongoing enhancement and maintenance of a sophisticated export controls compliance program for a global organization. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on complex, high-impact matters at the intersection of technology, geopolitics, and international trade, helping shape compliance strategy in a rapidly evolving regulatory environment. This is an existing vacancy.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain export controls compliance policies, procedures, and internal control frameworks tailored to business operations.
  • Provide guidance on U.S. export controls laws and regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and relevant agency guidance.
  • Support global export compliance initiatives, including the development of process improvements and automation tools.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to monitor, assess, and respond to evolving export controls and sanctions requirements.
  • Conduct periodic risk assessments to identify compliance gaps and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Contribute to export classification reviews, due diligence efforts, and compliance training programs.
  • Monitor geopolitical developments and regulatory changes to assess business impact and provide practical compliance solutions.
  • Support export controls-related projects and advise on sanctions-related considerations across jurisdictions.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in export controls, international trade compliance, or a related field, with a strong focus on EAR.
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience with export classification, compliance program development, and training.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. export controls laws and regulations, particularly EAR.
  • Private industry experience required; experience within large technology companies strongly preferred.
  • Ability to navigate complex geopolitical and regulatory environments with practical, business-oriented solutions.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent (preferred but not required); candidates may be attorneys or experienced non-attorneys.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working in or advising large technology companies or multinational organizations.
  • Familiarity with sanctions regulations and their intersection with export controls.
  • Experience with compliance program development, automation tools, or process optimization.
  • Deep, consistent experience focused primarily (80–100%) on export controls, ideally within the EAR framework.

Compensation:

The estimated total compensation for full-time Axiom attorney roles is $104,500-325,000 per year and for non-attorney roles is $71,250-309,750 per year. Compensation decisions are based on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience, skills, certifications, location, and business needs.  Employees may be eligible for additional benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance; paid holidays and PTO; flexible work arrangements; and professional development opportunities and tools.
