Frankfurt/Zurich, January 17th, 2019 – Axiom, a leading global alternative legal services provider, today announced that Daniel Biene has joined as General Manager, overseeing operations in Germany and Switzerland. The new role reflects Axiom’s commitment to, and investment in, the Swiss and German markets, and in the opportunity to drive adoption of alternative legal models across Europe. As GM, Biene will help Axiom achieve its growth objectives in the region, by nurturing and growing Axiom’s client roster and driving continued talent acquisition.

“Daniel brings to Axiom a unique entrepreneurial perspective and significant industry expertise, which will help guide and support our growth trajectory in Germany and Switzerland,” said Sandra Devine, Managing Director, Axiom Europe. “We’re thrilled to have him as part of our European leadership team, and believe his background advancing alternative legal models will not only benefit our Swiss and German clients, but will foster important collaboration between the two markets.”

Axiom was founded in 2000 and has had a footprint in Zurich since 2014, and in Frankfurt since 2017. With a vision of transforming the legal industry through talent and technology, Axiom leverages proprietary software, data, and processes to provide global companies with access to a flexible network of world-class lawyers, combining the breadth of expertise found at law firms with the cost-efficiency and integration of in-house hires. The integration of the German and Swiss markets under Biene’s leadership will enable Axiom to better serve the increasingly synergistic needs of clients across the two regions.

As founder of two legal technology startups (Smartlaw, which was since acquired by Wolters Kluwer, and Legalbase, which was since acquired by LegalZoom), Biene has significant experience introducing Swiss and German clients to alternative legal models.

Said Biene, “For many years, I have been working on accelerating the adoption of smarter and more efficient legal services. Combining Axiom’s deep and proven expertise with the changing market environment in these regions offers a unique and exciting opportunity. I am very excited to be part of Axiom’s vision to transform the legal industry in the Swiss and German markets.”

Prior to joining Axiom, Biene was partner in Change Group, one of Germany’s leading transformation and HR consultancies for the digital and media industry. Earlier in his career, he held management positions with large international media companies. At Axel Springer, he served as Publishing Director, and was President & CEO of its U.S. based subsidiaries.  Biene is a Board Member of the German-American Lawyers Association, an advisor and mentor to several technology startups and the Swiss Startup Factory, and a frequently invited speaker on innovation and entrepreneurship topics.

Originally trained as a media and entertainment lawyer, Biene clerked at the international law firm Clifford Chance in Hong Kong and started his career at Freshfields in Berlin. Biene holds a Ph.D. in Law and Economics from the University of Zurich, a Master of Laws in Entertainment and Media Law from Yeshiva University, and a J.D. from the University of Münster.
