Highlights from this month's issue include...

“Conflict of interest? Who cares?”
With only a few major law firms handling the shakeout of the Wall Street meltdown, the involved banks aren't too bothered by the resulting conflicts in representation.

“Day-of-reckoning for law firms”
As law firms feel the crunch of the current economic climate, everything from the structure of the billable hour to the once-commonplace associate pay-hikes must be re-evaluated.

“Increased client intimacy, not rates”
A more personal approach to legal services is bound to be more efficient and beneficial for attorneys and clients alike.

Life before Axiom: Anthera Pharmaceuticals; Bowne Financial; Cooley Godward
Something you should know: I’m going into my 9th year as a Cal Basketball Public Address Radio Announcer. I do the post-game show for Cal men’s basketball and used to do the post-game show for Cal Football. I’ve been doing this for so long that people actually have no idea that I’m a lawyer!
If I could be anywhere in the world: I’d be playing golf at Augusta National. To wake up every day and play that course… that’s the dream.
I became an attorney because: When I was in the 6th grade I told my parents I was going to Cal and then to law school, so really, I’ve just fulfilled my own prophecy.
Hidden talent:
Singing, songwriting, playing the keys - I’m in the middle of recording an album. My daughter’s piano teacher has a recording studio and her husband is a producer. He convinced me to re-visit songs I’d done about 18 years ago. After finishing a couple, he urged me to start writing again to finish an album. I’m about 7 songs in, and have no idea when I'll finish….
Life at Axiom: Tethys Bioscience

As the holidays approach, our thoughts inevitably drift toward times spent eating too much with friends and family. So in the holiday spirit, we’ve found some great ways for you to help make those dreams a reality, for both you and someone less fortunate.

Each year, Meals On Wheels of San Francisco mobilizes community volunteers to deliver turkey dinners to over 1,000 San Francisco seniors. Along with dinner, seniors receive flowers, candy and a placemat decorated by local school children. Make this special day of deliveries a new part of your own Thanksgiving tradition.

Still lamenting the fact that Supermarket Sweep was taken off the air? Get your fix with a creative race for a good cause. The Supermarket Street Sweep on December 6 is an annual bike race that benefits the San Francisco Food Bank. The jist? Zip around the city to five local supermarkets to bring back food to donate. Winners are chosen based on total pounds donated or speed!

Before the big games, the big meal, the parades and the pies, why not get active in the morning and use it as an excuse to spend the day overeating? The annual Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot is a 5K run/walk and 10K run with proceeds going to the Second Harvest Food Bank, the Santa Clara Family Health Foundation, and the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County.
