If you're like us, you find plants that have been known to consume rats, lizards and even small monkeys (seriously, SMALL MONKEYS?!) kind of scary but incredibly cool. Running now through the end of the summer at the Conservatory of Flowers is the special exhibit Chomp! and, monkey thing aside, we'd be going for the name alone. Among the Conservatory's collection of 1,500+ plant species, visitors will find carnivorous bladderworts, sundews, butterworts and other fauna that sound freshly plucked from a Harry Potter novel. If you've never been to the Conservatory and plants (primate-eating or otherwise) aren't really your thing, use the show as an excuse to check out the stunning greenhouse, regularly named one of San Francisco's architectural gems. Imported and erected in 1878, the dramatic Victorian structure is the oldest in the park and had to be rebuilt after being destroyed by a particularly mean windstorm in 1995. Thanks to the generosity of city residents (and maybe a little bit of public funding), the Conservatory reopened in 2003 and has been able to offer $5 entrance fees and plenty of perfect picnic spots ever since. Take our word for it and indulge the horticulture nerd in you with this spectacular exhibit of carnivorous wonders. Just leave the dog outside.
