life before axiom: GC, SF 49ers; Ticketmaster; Mattel; Baker & Hostetler; Boalt Hall; Stanford University
i joined axiom because: I made it to GC and said ‘This is great, but I’m tied to my desk and feel like I’m missing out on my personal and family life.’ I wanted sophisticated, fun work—joining Axiom was a no-brainer.
if i weren’t an attorney, i'd be: Coaching football—a high school or small college team. I love how football instills in kids the value of relying on your teammate.
if i could be anywhere, it would be: In a conference room at a conference table—wait a minute, it gets better—with Martin Luther King, JFK, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Winston Churchill and Jesus Christ. I would just ask them all to start talking.
something you should know: I had tea and coffeecake with a Maasai prince in his tiny house made of dried cow dung. It was in the Serengeti region of southwestern Kenya and despite what you may be thinking, it didn’t smell at all.

Want to beat the winter (ahem) blues? We’ve recently discovered the perfect way to enjoy a mid-winter escape without even having to leave the city. Think hearty soul food, legendary jazz, and a nightcap at one of the Bay Area’s coolest local watering holes.

Begin your evening with some down home fried chicken and truffle-infused mashed potatoes at 1300 on Fillmore, one of the swankiest new additions to the historic Fillmore Jazz District. You can’t help but get in the mood for tunes as you dine amongst framed photos of legendary jazz divas and vintage playbills of long-past Fillmore performances like Little Richard and Ike & Tina Turner.

After dinner, saunter over to Yoshi’s Jazz Club, sister venue of the famous Oakland Yoshi’s that has housed such renowned musicians as Dizzy Gillespie and Betty Carter. Although San Francisco’s Yoshi’s boasts a number of incredible upcoming performances, our tried-and-true recommendation is Arturo Sandoval, a trumpeter whose eclectic fusion of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music has earned him four Grammy awards and a collection of Billboard Music awards to boot. He’s coming back to town the last week of February and promises to knock our socks off all over again.

If you still have a few beats left in you after doing it up right at Yoshi’s, head a couple blocks over to Bar 821. A chic, cozy bar specializing in champagne cocktails and imported Belgian beers, 821 will keep you in your laidback groove. Better arrive on the early side, though, because this Fillmore district hotspot is so underground and speakeasy cool that they close their doors to new patrons at 11pm. Why not round out the night with a nightcap? You’re in Motown tonight.
