Run out of excuses for “checking in” with your boat-owning friends in the hopes that they’ll float an invite for a day at sea your way? Cal Sailing Club is coming to the rescue. About every other Sunday (coinciding with high tides), they offer first-come, first-served nautical joy rides captained by the co-op’s volunteering members. There’s no obligation to take a tour or join (though you’ll want to) — just show up at their clubhouse on the south side of the Berkeley Marina wearing warm, water-friendly clothing. Don’t forget to throw a spare set of clothes in the car because while the South Sailing Basin may not be the Tropic of Cancer, you're not likely to return to the dock only fashionably windblown. From April through October the members will even let you tag along to their après-sail barbeque on the marina green— chip in $5 and learn how to tie some pretty impressive knots. Which, of course, will come in handy the next time you have those nautical neighbors over for cocktails. Show them you can tie a sheepshank blindfolded and that coveted ‘no invitation necessary’ status is yours.
