There's nothing wrong with a little healthy competition between professionals, particularly when it involves one of our favorite vices. On July 19th, Pampano chef and owner Richard Sandoval (who's also to thank for Maya, the critically acclaimed and oft-hailed best Mexican restaurant in the city) invites award-winning Monterray, Mexico chef Guillermo Gonzáles Beristáin onto home turf for Guest Chef Night 2007. Think of it as a south-of-the-border spin on Iron Chef minus the television crew, poor dubbing and eight courses made out of sea urchin. The two Mexico natives, both renowned for their fresh and innovative takes on haute-Mexican cuisine, will each contribute courses to the $99 prix-fixe menu (including complimentary wine pairing), leaving it to ceviche junkies like us to judge who's the master of the new-Mexican kingdom. With two expert chefs sweating it out for top honors of one of the city's most challenging and misinterpreted cuisines, we predict it'll be hard to pick a victor (but you better believe we're willing to try).
