life before axiom: Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation; Proskauer Rose; Hughes Hubbard; Columbia; Harvard Law
childhood ambition: To be a Sandy Hook Pilot, living the dangerous life of helping guide vessels to port—I thought that sounded awfully cool as a kid and in some ways I still do…
i feel most at home: In the water. I’ve been scuba diving for over 20 years. My favorite wreck dive is an armored cruiser sunk off Fire Island during WWI. It’s slowly collapsing, but you can still swim inside—I have a gun powder canister I found from its main guns.
secret passion: Skiing fast and steep. I didn’t start until my mid-30’s and it’s been the greatest physical challenge of my adult life… Somehow I’ve only seriously injured myself once!
life at axiom: American Express

Cold got you down? Then keep on reading—we’ve discovered a few ways to help you beat the winter blues.

Nothing melts the deep freeze like homestyle BBQ served with a healthy helping of warm southern hospitality, which is just what you’ll find over at Julep, a “beer, BBQ & blues” joint in the East Village. Toss some quarters into their famous jukebox, sink into one of their cozy couches and let a Black Label mint julep special and the soothing voice of Billie Holiday thaw out the cold.

Tired of seeing triple digits on your Con-Ed bill? Turn down the thermostat, hop on the subway and pay a visit to the Wave Hill Conservatory in the Bronx. Thanks to 80-degree temperatures, the Chilean Orange Flame Vine and Australian Golden Mimosa have forgotten they’re in the Northern Hemisphere and you will too. Throw on those favorite summer shorts (over your long underwear and under your winter parka, of course) and take a take a stroll through the humid and colorful cornucopia of exotic plants from all over the world. We promise you’ll feel instantly transported to a warmer climate.

If you’d rather build the fire from within, drop into a steamy Bikram yoga class. A 105-degree airtight studio will loosen up those frozen joints and muscles faster than you can say “good God it’s hot in here!” Not interested in twisting yourself into a human pretzel? Take a more passive approach to warmth with a hot-stone massage. Visualize your bikini-clad self sweating on a sunny beach in the Caribbean as warm oils are kneaded into your skin and hot stones are applied to pressure points along your body. The heat will penetrate so deeply you’ll feel like you’re already halfway to St. Barts—no pricey airfare or vacation days required.
