life before axiom: Goldman Sachs; Cravath, Swaine & Moore; Columbia University School of Law; Princeton
childhood ambition: To become a park ranger. As a kid, we used to take family vacations to all the national parks and I remember never wanting to be anywhere else.
i became an attorney because: My plan to be a doctor fell through when I realized I couldn’t stand the sight of blood. Still a molecular biology major, I attended a panel and, serendipitously, one of the panelists happened to be a patent attorney. The combination intrigued me.
if i weren't an attorney i would be: A pastry chef. I love to bake and my dream is to go to culinary school. It’s on top of the Life List.
guilty pleasure: The Food Network and HGTV. We’re looking for a new home, so I’m calling it research! life at axiom: American Express, Mellon, Maxcor |

With the holidays upon us, urbanites prepare to visit people and places they promise they’ll see more of next year. If you’re not one of the many participating in the mass exodus, here are a few ways of getting out of the city without leaving the island.
Nostalgic for the hearty fare and rich wines from your summer abroad in Italy (Best. Summer. Ever.)? Check out Bacaro, a new Venetian bar and restaurant on the fringes of Chinatown. Bright and welcoming upstairs and dark and brooding down, Bacaro’s two bars will accommodate either of your moods, kind of like your sweet host mother of so many years past (similarly and thankfully, Bacaro will also turn a blind eye when you stumble up the stairs and out onto the street after one too many glasses of Sangiovese).
If the northern hemisphere’s just not rugged and adventurous enough for you, take a trip over to New York’s first South African wine bar, Xai Xai, located in Hell’s Kitchen. Wash down that meat pie or toasted ‘saamie’ with a bottle of one of almost 100 different South African wines, most of which also come by the glass if you’re feeling noncommittal.
For a central European experience, head to
Café Katja, a cozy new 25-seat Austrian bar at home on the Lower East Side. Tuck into landjaeger smoked sausage, homemade pickles, beef goulash with spactzle… whatever your kleines herz desires. Beer lovers also rejoice — Katja specializes in hard to find German and Austrian lagers, pilsners and Hefeweisens. Try the 14% Samichlaus if you dare… it’ll knock your liederhosen off.
