If you’re like most New Yorkers during the holiday season, you spend your time playing human bumper cars with the droves of adoring, camera-toting visitors that have come to bask in the city’s seasonal kitsch (ponder this: an HOV lane for residents during rush hour).
Guess what? There are plenty of holiday season sights and activities beyond the yuletide circus of Midtown for locals to enjoy.
For the members of Origami USA, the holidays started in July when its members began folding the hundreds of intricate paper creations that now adorn the Origami Holiday Tree at the American Museum of Natural History. The theme of this year’s tree is Origami Safari and visitors can expect to see over 500 carefully-folded lions, tigers and bears (oh my). If you’re inspired to feed your creativity and want to hone your origami skills beyond those schoolyard fortune-telling “cootie catchers,” the Museum will have volunteers on hand to teach visitors of all ages the art of origami folding.
If you prefer your trees to be made of… trees, take a trip downtown to the World Financial Center’s waterfront Winter Garden, which features forty-five-foot palm trees decked out with a blinding 100,000 twinkling white lights. Come for the lights, stay for the show. The Winter Garden features ongoing holiday programs and concerts whether you celebrate Christmas with a cappella carols from the Accidentals, Hanukkah with Klezmerfest! or Kwanzaa with the Seventh Principle Dance Ensemble, all performing throughout the month… and without a single Rockette in the bunch.
