Throughout the sixties Chelsea grew into a bohemian commune mixing fashion, liberalism and art. In the seventies, it became the area of choice for punk and a new generation of anarchistic artists called it home. Then came the 80s and with it, a different vibe which has remained and allowed the neighbourhood to be labeled as the home of the Sloane. But revolt is in the air and the edge that for so long defined this neighbourhood is making its way back in the form of the new Saatchi Modern Art Gallery.
Located in the totally revamped Duke of York’s barracks just off the King’s road, it's kick starting the backlash by featuring the most cutting edge modern art exhibitions Britain has ever seen. The inaugural exhibition, The Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art, brought together the work of 24 of China’s leading artists in a hyper modern survey of recent painting, sculpture and installation. For the New Year, Unveiled: New Art From The Middle East will makes its debut and promises to be just as intriguing.
In the spirit of revolt, bring an open mind but feel free to leave your wallet at home – admission is free.
